Back off man, I’m a scientist.

A young Neil deGrasse Tyson. From the article:

Frank Bash, professor emeritus of astronomy and former director of UT’s McDonald Observatory, supervised Tyson as a teaching assistant for Intro to Astronomy. “Neil had a natural gift for teaching,” Bash says. “After he taught, the students would beg for him back. He did crazy stuff—moonwalking in class.”
Doing the moonwalk for his students wasn’t a gag, Tyson says—it was a strategy. “If you’re only using words to communicate as a teacher, why show up?” he says. “Why not just type your notes? Teaching is a full-body performance. The moonwalk was all the rage in 1983, and the students loved it. It made the material work for them.”
According to Tyson, one of the biggest reasons scientists so often struggle to communicate research to the public is not jargon or lack of interest. It’s a culture gap.
“The average person watches 30 hours of television per week,” he says. “But the average professor doesn’t own a TV, let alone watch the Kardashians or cute kitten videos on YouTube or whatever. And people live for that stuff. We have to speak their language.”

Please share far and wide! (note, the image provided is the mugshot from when Jordi was first processed. He may have long beard and longer hair)
Attention all clinics/escorts/etc. in FL: Be aware of this man! STEPHEN JOHN JORDI will be released from federal prison to a half-way house in Miami this February (the 12th). Jordi was incarcerated for pleading guilty to attempted arson of an abortion clinic, distributing information on how to manufacture an explosive device, possession of an unregistered silencer, and other numerous charges that imply dastardly abortion clinic terrorist deeds. Needless to say, we need to keep our eyes peeled and up our security in the southern Florida area, let alone the whole state.
The scariest part? The Army of God abortion terrorist organization has taken him under their wing, and definitely support him and his ways.
This was taken from their website:

(Stephen’s own brother and his church sold him out to the authorities. Another example not tell ANYONE; before, during or after, if you are planning on taking action. Your family, pro-lifers and your church ‘friends’ will sell you out in a heartbeat, thinking they are doing God’s will.) Matthew 10:21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child:and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

If you work at a clinic or know someone who does, I do suggest contact the FMN (Feminist Majority Network - http://www.feminist.org/rrights/ncapabout.asp) and getting on their list. They send out Regional Security Alerts whenever someone like the “gentleman” above is a potential threat and they are also available 24/7 via phone, to help if the police are, um, less than helpful.

Taking a break from Facebook Friday/my restful day of hiatus to blog this. Serious, scary stuff, everyone, take note Floridian followers.

XBOX, NEXT EPISODE
This is us, pretty much every night. Voice commands via the Kinect don’t work as well as advertised, unfortunately. You just end up yelling XBOX NEXT EPISODE at your TV at least three or four times before it works.

Anxiety: A Uniquely Human Experience

jtotheizzoe:

From “The Brain and the Roots of Fear ”:

While anxiety is defined by uncertainty, human anxiety is greatly amplified by our ability to imagine the future, and our place in it, even a future that is physically impossible.  With imagination we can ruminate over that yet to be experienced, possibly impossible scenario. We use this creative capacity to great advantage when we envision how to make our lives better, but we can just as easily put it to work in less productive ways — worrying excessively about the outcome of things. Some concern about outcomes is essential to success in meeting life’s challenges and opportunities. But at some point, most of us probably worry more than we need to.  This raises the questions: How much fear and worry is too much? How do we know when we have skipped the line from normal fear and anxiety to a disorder?

Fear and anxiety are in the brain because they helped our ancestors and theirs cope with life’s challenges. But when these states interfere with our ability to survive and thrive, one has an anxiety disorder. These include phobias, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress syndrome, generalized anxiety disorder, among other conditions.
